Generosity

Glancing up at my subscription status reminded me that I was nearing the end of it. It struck me as a little funny, since thanks to winning some contests a few years back I haven't had to buy myself one since... oh, 2007? Someone (and I won't say who) said recently that when his subscription ran out, all he did was mention it and within six minutes some generous soul had resubscribed him. I'm not surprised. Not having to buy subscriptions for myself for a few years has let me stealth-subscribe several deviants, give subs out for prizes, and in a couple of cases, give subscriptions I'd won away to other people who needed them more than me. We're a community, and we look out for each other.

I've already bought myself another subscription (yay for automatic renewals). I can afford it. But...

I've put together a list below of some really amazing artists who for one reason or another (at the time of this writing) don't have subscriptions. If you're one of those generous community members who likes to do random good deeds... why not surprise subscribe some of these people?

Go ahead, make someone else's day!

Let's turn some of these ~ into * :

This list was compiled semi-randomly from the people who I watch. I watch a LOT of people, so this is really just a small selection

Update

WOW. They're ALL subscribed now. Wicked. You guys totally rock. Seriously. So how about this? Send me a link to a dA artist who YOU think rocks and deserves a subscription, but doesn't have one. I'll make a second box featuring those artists below.

Update2

I've heard back from some of the artists above who are surprised and delighted to find themselves subscribed. Some of them (specifically sandara and chicourano ) have been looking for the person who gave them their subscriptions to thank. If you're the one and don't mind stepping forward, drop them a note. :D

If you didn't get a chance to do a good deed with the last go round, you'll find a list below of several more deviants that have been suggested by others.

Recent events in my life have really struck home for me how important it is to be kind, and do charitable things with no expectation of reward or accolades for it. Compassion is a rare commodity. Kindness and charity, too. If you've any yourself, plant it where it can grow. It will be appreciated, and you never know how even the smallest gesture will change a person's life.

The following deviants were suggested by other members. Still feeling generous? Check them out!

Untitled Secondary ProjectPrologue
Alina Fakhriyya glanced again behind her and pulled her veil up over the bridge of her nose. She took a deep breath and tightened the belt around her skirt. Hanging from the leather strap around her waist was a soft calfskin pouch filled with golden coins and small gems. It wasn’t much, to her reckoning, but it was probably enough to get her transport out of Zaman without too many questions.
With one last look at the room in which she’d spent her life since she was old enough to have womanly curves, Alina disappeared through the faceted window. The streets were quiet, particularly at the early hour of the morning, and she was able to slip away from the prison she’d been stuck in for years.
She breathed a sigh of relief as she reached the dock. She was so close, now, and she had her chance to see the world. She was well aware of the fact that she was probably the most naïve person on the face of the planet, but she had enough intelligence to know that she co
The DanceI glanced up at him uncertainly, adjusting the mask over my face even as I did so. His hand was still extended toward me and there was a smile playing at his lips and in the eyes behind the half-mask that he was wearing.
“Uh…” I said, looking down at the short, lace gloves on my hands.
“She’d love to,” my friend responded for me and shoved me out of my seat.
I stumbled and the man who’d just asked me to dance quickly moved to steady me. I blushed furiously behind my full mask and hoped that he didn’t notice.
“Are you alright?” he asked, just loud enough to be heard over the music.
“Mhmm,” I mumbled back and nodded.
“Come on,” he said gently, offering his hand again to lead me to the dance floor.
“I-I don’t know how-” I started.
“Nonsense,” he said, flashing a smile at me. “I saw you dancing earlier. I’m sure you’ll be able to keep up.”
He led me to the middle of the dance
Debris of a LifetimeKaylee leaned out, gripping the ladder in one hand and reaching for James with the other.
“Don’t worry about me, Kaylee!” James called over the din. “I’ll be fine, just get yourself out!”
“James, if you stay, I stay. We’ve got each other’s backs, no matter what, remember? I’m not leaving you here!”
“I can’t hold on much longer!” James gasped, his hands starting to slip off the broken railing. “Just get out of here while you still can!”
“NO!” Kaylee screamed as his hands slipped off the one thing keeping him alive. She seized his wrist before he could fall too far and swung him onto the ladder below her. “You’re getting out of here, too.” She insisted.
“Okay, let’s go.” James panted, relieved that he wasn’t forced to say goodbye to his best and closest friend.
Once they’d gotten down to the bottom of the ladder, some three or four stories down, they bolted th

*shrug* I don't see what people complain about. I haven't had a subscription ever nor do I care about it one way or the other. Their complaint about the adds just seem silly to me.

I think it's a neat idea that you're showing others that it's ok to be giving with a community like this. That's one of the things I like about DA, while I might not know anyone but a few on here in real life, I've got a nice band of friends and I have the opportunity to see some amazing artwork and meet some great people.

I happen to have this friend - :iconalmasnamir: She's a wonderful person with excellent writing. Since there are no writers that I spied in those lists, I thought "why not mention her?" :D I can't afford to buy a subscription for her myself, even if they're cheap (my one was won in a contest) so I really hope some other generous person here will give her one. I'd love to see her spruce up her page to make her writing look even better :D

i second whimsi absolutely!!! i pretty dislike "begging" for subs in journals, it´s the same thing to me like this "i´m having my birthday in X days, i want free art cuz of that" stuff.
i appreciate your attitude, it´s refreshing to see nowadays.

I really appreciate your attitude here :)

I have seen a couple of people I watch have their subscriptions run out, and are immediately hopping on their journals to practically demand subscriptions from their admiring fans (and obviously usually get one!) I am not saying gifting a sub is bad, I've done it several times since joining dA, so don't get me wrong.

But when I look at the cost of subs, I wonder why some of these artists just don't get one for their own damn self instead of making themselves out to be asses, begging for subs, and threatening (i've seen it!) "dA just won't be usable if I have to work around ads..."

Your post here just makes my day, it is so entirely opposite to the above attitude. I have no doubts that your requesting a gift-sub could earn you one nearly immediately, but instead you recognize the givers of past subs, and dare I say, feel gratitude? And then, you go on to make a note of some really great artists who could use subs!? Whoa, pal. I am really impressed, not that I wouldn't expect it of you based on what I can gather from your personality in your journals, but just that it is so awesome what you are doing.

Thank you for being a damn good person, and I mean that :)

My first few subs I purchased, then I started winning them in contests and they piled up. It was nice being subscribed, but when I realized I had a subscription that would last almost two years... well at that point it seemed really selfish to keep accepting subscription prizes. So I gave one away to someone else in the contest I was in who didn't win one. It felt really good, and that person was thrilled.

Since then I've given subs for all kinds of reasons. As prizes for contests, because an artist I like came back after a loooong hiatus and I wanted him to know he was appreciated and missed, for another artist who I'd admired who just joined, and once even to a person who had spent the better part of a page arguing with me about one of my paintings. Some went to friends, some went to strangers... but every single time the person was thrilled (and sometimes they never did figure out who gave it to them--those emails go missing sometimes, I guess). And it made me feel good to put a smile on someone else's face.

For me... a subscription REALLY isn't that expensive. Hell, $7.95 automatically charged every three months? I wish *GAS* was that cheap. Seriously small price to pay for a site that I really like, a community I've come to enjoy being a part of, and a service that's easily worth ten times that.

And I've seen other people do exactly as you said: "my sub is running out, halp!"... and every time there's someone generous who steps up and does. For me... I'd be uncomfortable asking for such a thing. But for other people who I like and admire: hell, if there are people out there who are that generous and, like me, enjoy doing something small but kind for a stranger, I'll point them at a few who could use it.

Least I can do, right?

I can use the good karma points, anyway. They make up for all the time I spend griping about humanity in general. :D

I don't see why the talent of the person matters in order for someone to deserve a subscription.
Reply
:iconmelissafindley:
MelissaFindley Featured By Owner Apr 7, 2009  Professional General Artist
it doesn't. I just happened to pick people from my watch list to feature, and most of those people are talented. It's not a requirement to help these people out, of course. If there's someone on your watch list who you think deserves a sub, get them one! I once deliberately gave a subscription to a person who was rude to me, and insulting to one of my paintings--because I wanted to. Not because they were talented or because they were even nice... but because I looked at their gallery and thought they should have somebody give them a boost.

Sometimes it's one random act of generosity that makes the difference... it doesn't really matter to who.
