The Crow King by MelissaFindley The Crow King by MelissaFindley
So I decided to go back and revisit the subject of an old painting that I wasn't happy with any more. At the time that I painted the original mercuralis.deviantart.com/art/… , it was one of my favorite pieces, but since then... whenever I look at it I see something I really don't like. A lot of somethings. Particularly his outfit.

I'm much, much happier with this new version of the character. I imagine that in a few years I'll want to do it over again, but in the meantime I'm pleased.

Details here: Attending the Crow King-detail by MelissaFindley
Partial Walkthrough here: mercuralis.deviantart.com/art/…

And I'm putting together a time-lapse video of the entire painting. It's just slow going since it's a big file.

Yes, yes that was my first thought too! I know it *isn't* Spock, but I couldn't NOT see it. maybe one of those weird planets where they had to dress up like that time with the gangsters or Nazis. XD

This is great, very dark and mysterious. All the branches in the background and the change of lighting really add to the piece, and I love his face and costume.

I like the detail you've done with the character, but the background is what I'm liking most of all, all those gnarled twisty branches. Really sets up an appropriate environment for him.

This really has to be my favorite thing from you, Mel. He has a certain aura about him, mysterious, bemused...I can see him spinning some dreams for the unsuspecting dreamer.

In fact, this image reminds me of a dream with the way the background descends into darkness with a hint of glowing sunbeams lighting his face. It's a wonderfully subtle and awesome effect.

And those blackening nails are neat too. I could just devour all the little details in the detail shot all evening. Love it:D

Oy you make me want to get off my bum and play with my tablet, which sits neglected in lieu of the watercolors!

Fantastically cool character! I love his overall design, but what really gets me are the little hanging shinies in the background. After all, it wouldn't be a proper gathering of corvids without some shinies. :3 As always, beautiful work.

The character resembles Leonard Nimoy, aka the Vulcan Spock in «Star Trek». Don't know if it was intentional but it looks great :) .

No offense meant toward Trek fans, (after all, I'm married to one), but I hardly think Spock has a monopoly on pointy ears, winged brows and dark hair. I don't actually think my character looks anything at all like Spock, and I certainly didn't set out to make him look that way.

It kinda bugs me when people do this. Superficially they may have some similarities, but really... he looks nothing like either leonard nimoy or the kid who played young spock in the film. The jaw is wrong, the eyes are wrong, the nose is most definitely wrong...

I understand your comparison was meant as a compliment, but it is a little irritating when people can't see past superficial characteristics.

And it bothers me somewhat to think that you'd think that I'd deliberately set out to win over a subset of fans from a different genre just to boost a painting's appeal.

I am very sorry if what I wrote did upset you. Indeed I shouldn't have made any assumption about what you'd think or not. This was really a mistake.

But to be honest, I didn't see the differences you mentioned -- yes, you guessed that right. Maybe I'm too superficial or a poor judge of faces (which I know I am), don't know. There are however people, like me, who can't always see past superficial characteristics yet appreciate art their own way -- judging from my own experience. You can't ignore them either nor feel upset if they don't see past the surface.

As an IT dev' guy I always put my guts and soul in programs I write -- I put guts and soul in everything I do BTW. Yet nobody notices my code (call it a form of art if you like) and they even don't care. This is not very gratifying either but I've learnt to live with it as what I code only shows when scratching beyond the surface; only a fellow developer can appreciate and there are far less developers than computer users. You see I understand your message -- my own way maybe but I know what you mean.

I for one couldn't control the feeling I had when I saw your artwork nor ignore the similarity I saw with the person I mentioned. This cannot be changed. I just thought I had to share it. My bad?

Art is a matter of personal taste and sensibility, subjective by essence. Not everybody is meant to see the tiny little detail artists put in their work, understand a piece of art the way it was meant by the artist. I guess I rewarded you poorly, I am very sorry about that. Yet I am aware of my limits and don't think I shall ever be judged for that.

I wouldn't say it "upset" me. Irritated is a better word, I think, and mostly only because I've experienced this phenomenon so often.

Not every pale, spindly crouching creature is gollum.
Not everything with pointy ears is an elf.
Not every wild haired guy is meant to be that character from that anime that I've never even heard of.

It's not so much about appreciation for the finer differences. It's more that... it makes me feel unoriginal. And, yeah, I'm a troper, I know there's not much out there that actually IS original. But my characters live in my head as fully fleshed out beings and I do my best to put them down on canvas as what they are so other people can see them that way. So in a sense, it feel like a failure when the best someone can say is "Oh, this looks like [insert something that has nothing to do with what I was trying to make it look like]!"

And more than likely it IS a failure on my part, not yours. Either in the sense that I didn't accomplish what I wanted... which was a character who could stand on his own and be iconic in his own way. Or in that I feel like it is if someone notices a superficial resemblance.

I know you're never going to see even half the details I put into this. Believe me, I'm well aware of what it's like. I'm married to an IT guy who usually glances at my paintings and says "Cool!" or "Nice!" or "I like it" and... that's the end of it. He doesn't spend even a hundredth of the time I do, staring at it, looking at the minute tiny details and trying to make them work. And that's okay. I don't expect him to. Not his job.

Not yours either, really.
