If this is in the wrong place, I'm sorry mods... feel free to move it to the right one.
I've seen a lot of other artists do this, and I always thought it was fascinating to be able to see someone's artistic development over the years. So since I got a scanner and a digital camera for Christmas and my birthday, I decided to pull out my old sketchbooks and do one of my own.
The oldest image in my sketchbooks was from 1990-1991, right around the start of sixth grade, I think. I drew a lot of random things over the first few years, and my sketchbooks are mostly full of drawings of hands, and other random bits and pieces. There's also a lot of fan art in there: Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast and Lion King, mostly.
When I started into highschool, I was in high fantasy gear, so there were a lot of dragons and vampires around that time. My anatomy was getting better, but not much.
I took a break from art, around my junior year of high school, and didn't really pick up a pencil to seriously draw again until college, when I took a couple of crappy drawing classes. We were given free reign to draw pretty much whatever we wanted, and then we'd all gather around people's work and critique it. There's some major improvements in this time period.
In 2004, I got my first Wacom tablet. There was some digital work prior to that, but it's all on a backup disk somewhere else. The first year I spent mostly fooling around with Photoshop, and copying a lot of pose references fairly closely.
2005, I was still using a lot of photo references for poses, but getting braver about things, and I was also putting up my work over at Epilogue's Work In Progress forums, and getting a lot of good critique and feedback.
In 2006, I made a major switch in how I worked. I started trusting myself more, as an artist, and really pushing the envelope on what I was doing. The first part of the year I spent slowly weaning myself off of photo references, and some of my best work from late last year had no photo references at all.
What's in store for this year? You'll just have to watch and see.
Its truely great to see such progression I can only hope that I could see something of the same in my own art.... lol if I actually did any these days heheh
looking forward to your 2007 additions honey!
