In the Twilight Court by MelissaFindley In the Twilight Court by MelissaFindley
No, this has nothing to do with the book Twilight.

This is, possibly one of my most ambitious paintings, and the culmination of a lot of other paintings and subjects I've tackled over the last few years. I started this more than a month an a half ago--before I painted Oberon--and I think there are things I would have done differently if I'd started it after I'd painted Oberon. However, over all, I'm pleased with it.

The painting is loosely based on a story I'm working on at the moment--so no touchy on the subject matter, please.

Some textures were used in this, most from my own images, some built in Painter textures, and a few from

I love this! I like especially how you have the yin-yang-esque theme between tha male and female fae- female and light, male and dark! Totally inspiring!

Lovely, enchanting piece. Certainly approaches a masterpiece, but I think you have hopes to do even better, so I will not name it such. I'm proud to say that I didn't think of that silly book when I saw the title...but then, I also pride myself on being fairly well-versed in fae folklore. And this certainly captures the feel of that. I have a feeling more than a few people will be buying the print.

Lovely concept. I very much like the greens and the water :}

Well, I like it, but what do I know anywho. ;) Actually it's really got some great depth to it, and it brings you in to it's world, which is all you can ask for a Fantasy art piece. And it's got some really nice rendering as well! So - fine job all around.

Thanks Pat.

Sadly, short of madly recropping it, I can't see what I could do that would change the composition enough to resubmit it to Epi--even if I lucked out and got you as an editor. If I DON'T change it ... I can't resubmit.

So rock, hard place. Normally I'm in agreement with rejections. If this had gotten dumped for inconsistent lighting, I'd probably have understood it. Composition, though? Seriously? It seemed like such a weird niggling point. I don't know who rejected it, and maybe they meant to hit a different reject reason. However I put so much time and effort into this one (ESPECIALLY into the composition) that I'm far too irritated with the rejection reason that was given to even attempt to straighten it out. Is that lazy or stupid of me?

I hope not.

I guess I'll just submit it to my CGSociety portfolio and keep it here and on my website. I sadly don't dare use Epilogue for any kind of professional showcase due to the intrusive ads and popups.
PatrickMcEvoy Featured By Owner Apr 9, 2009  Professional General Artist
Yeah, I know what you mean. I have gotten SO upset at rejections in the past (only a couple but still...). I never resubmit, just go on to the next one. bleh! Part of life, I guess.

I hadn't actually seen any popups on Epi yet... maybe I have a different system? I just use my personal site for submissions anyway - that way I'm in control.

Thanks for the kind words, Pat. I feel like such a prima donna being irritated about this--but it really feels like a nitpicky rejection. Worse, I pretty much now know who it was that rejected it, and I have some major irritations about that, too.

*sigh* Anyway, guess I need to just grow up and move on.
PatrickMcEvoy Featured By Owner Apr 11, 2009  Professional General Artist
Not a prima dona at all. If you weren't irritated it would be kinda weird, really. ;)

If I could say something more clever than the usual "it is a beautiful work" , I would be happy to do so. But really, you made may day.
I was just re-reading a certain Shakesperean play...(that maybe it has nothing to do with your idea), anyway I though "This is exactly how THEY must look like!!
Huge amounts of ammiration!!

This is a gorgeous scene. I love the way Titania's dress flows down to merge into the grass, moss, and other forest floor coverings. Her hair is also quite lovely, and Oberon's bored/annoyed expression is very appropriate, especially taking into account your previously posted depiction/characterization of the fae.

Beautiful - I really like the way Oberon(?) turned out - the antlers remind me of the Celtic horned god Cernunnos (I suppose they could be considered cultural counterparts)... the angle of the mossy tree-root blending with the woman (Titania?)'s skirt gives the slight effect of a mermaid's tail, I thought - interesting when juxtaposed with her legs. The delicacy of the details contrasts amazingly with the raw power implied by the characterisitcs. Great!

I could go on a tangent about every aspect I love in this painting, but I shall sum it up with "Phenomenal". I'm especially stunned by your use of lighting, and would love to be able to do that myself one day. The background coloration and detail are also worthy of note. The figures are splendid--I promised I wouldn't go on a tangent. Oops!

I would love to see that story you have in mind one day. Keep it up. ^_^

That dress of the woman makes me wonder how often she moves... No, it's a lovely piece and all of that detail nearly creates an entire fairytail world even though it's probably only one corner of one. Looking forward to hearing more about this story of yours. and good luck with it and keeping your sanity if it's a very long story.

I love your usual characters but I absolutely love how you have made a more complex piece here. Now I can enjoy not only your great characters but a wonderfully enticing and enchanting background that brings a life and story to it. Well done!!
How do you do it?

This is beautiful!

Can't wait to read the story attached to it.

P.S. Is that a man or a woman in the broken archway?
