Dream by MelissaFindley Dream by MelissaFindley
Loosening up after several weeks of not being able to work. Knocked this out in a couple of hours. I've had Neil Gaiman and his Sandman characters on the brain for weeks now, so it felt good to get this out of my system.

As always, and I hate to have to publicly state this, I do not sell my fan art in any way, so please don't submit print requests.

The Water reminds me of how dream would make it rain when he was sad, I like it a lot :)

This is SUCH an amazing interpretation of the character. And the drip pattern just really adds something to the mood of this, something very mysterious and dreary that definitely fits Dream.

I adore it.

Oh, you got his eyes so perfect. Amazing job. A pity you don't sell, really. I'd love to see Neil's reaction to it as well.

You could send him a link, I suppose. I don't think he minds fan art. It's the people that start selling it that get in trouble.

It has a gorgeous coldness to it, and I love the water effects, like... rain down a window?

He is all interesting and angsty, om nom. Kinda makes me wanna look at this Sandman, whatever it is... a book?

A series of comics/graphic novels written by Neil Gaiman. Dream is one of the seven Endless: Destiny, Death, Dream, Destruction, Despair, Desire and Delirium. He is also the title character of the series since most of it revolves around his realm, The Dreaming, and it's interaction with ours.

You really have no clue what you're talking about, do you? Here, before you hurt yourself: [link])

Bob Marley as a vampire, indeed. I'm not sure but I think both the author and the musician would take offense at that.

Concering the Dream comics, no, I hadn't a clue at all. Thanks for the link though, they look great!

No offence was intended at all... Bob Marley is a fave of mine and I noticed that as the image had long dark hair rather resembling dreadlocks, combined with the angular features (you know how unusual Bob Marley's features were?)... combined with the black eyes and pale skin, it's how I would picture him as a vamp.

If I mention BobMarly in relation to anything, it's generally a compliment. But either way, it's a great pic.

I was able to read sandman all the way through because of a friend last year, it gets to quite mind boggling levels some times doesn't it? So much so, I daresay you could have recorded the audio of my mind going boggle, boggle, boggle.

I think the lord of dream would be happy with this picture :)

When you put a picture together, which do you find the most difficult to do, out of the line, or the colour?

Neither. I think the hardest part of a painting is pushing past the point where you think "it's finished" to get to the place where it starts being awesome. It's like this invisible place where you've colored in everything and it's all looking right and you start to get bored with it... and then the challenge is to look at it with fresh eyes, to get excited with it again, and to pour even more into it until it's really done.

I find it's similar with my art. But I also find the beginning a bit of a challenge too. Blank sheet time.

I find a break and a walk into the kitchen to make a drink and maybe some toast helps with the looking with fresh eyes for myself, but I can see my screen while I stand at the kettle too, so I find distance sometimes helps to focus on different areas of an image than I find when I'm up close.

Thankyou for taking the time to reply.

I think you captured the Dream King wonderfully. I always imagined him to be this beautiful but not really approachable character, immensely powerful but a little distant.

Those eyes. They give me chills.

Well, being a fan of both your work and Gaiman's it's great to see Dream through your eyes. So glad you took a bit to paint this for you share it with us. You've done a terrific job on his eyes and facial expression... he looks very emotive.

Again, my dear, I must say you have a knack to paint our tall-dark-sexy-male dreams (pun fully intended) :D

*shrug* if you say so. Don't have an X-box and I'd never heard of the game before. But I guess a dark haired character with weird eyes is bound to look exactly like every other dark haired character with weird eyes to some people.

Did you know? Jareth is older than Morpheus? (Labyrinth came out in '86 and Sandman vol. 1 came out in '89).

And it is said that Morpheus's appearance is partially based on Bowie, so who knows?

You've really captured the empty sparkling of Dream's eyes, in my opinion. They were always drawn as abstracted starbursts in the comic and I always wondered how I might draw that in a more realism based style in my dalliance with doing Gaiman Sandman fanart. The fact that you've made his eyes less sparkling and more of a far off glimmer, as if there was some sort of vast inner space, is really neat. Ahaha and now I've rambled enough about Dream's eyes XD

The drip effect is perfect too. It gives this image a traditionally painted feel.
