All My Heroes are Bad Boys by MelissaFindley All My Heroes are Bad Boys by MelissaFindley
Well... they are. :D Knights in shining armor are boring. They never want to have any fun.

I love this guy. Really. Love him. Wanna take him home and put him somewhere fireproof, cause damn, he's hot.

Also, I've always wanted to paint something that was so black that it seemed to suck in the light. His Shadowsteed here is my probably-not-entirely-successful attempt at that. The difficulty with painting something that is *that* dark is... it ends up looking kinda flat. But I tried.

Please, full view.

You did admirably well with it, after all, it's hard to shade something that's darkness made solid with no highlights.

i don't think his steed is too dark, the colour in the eyes, nostrils etc. stop him from being, as you said, too flat.

This painting is so well-done. From looking at your older work, I can see how much you've improved... but even your older work is amazing! I love the look on his face, the stare that he gives you. Shiver-inducing... in the best way. ^_^

I think you did a good job on his Shadowsteed as well. It reminds me of D&D. They have a similar creature called a "nightmare", which is a black horse with flames for hair. Very trippy creature. ^_^

Yep. My one and only Sketch of the Week at CGTalk. I have mixed feelings there. Sometimes I feel like it doesn't matter how good my sketches are, I get passed over in favor of the Big Boys, you know? Even if theirs are a little subpar. There's a lot of favoritism there.

LoL I've noticed that too..Or they're highly competitive to the point where if you're not one of the bigwigs they'll shoot ya down? I reckon if even Brom posted something there under a nom de plume he'd be torn to shreds. Then if he posted a crappy little sketch he'd be lauded all over the place. Seems like that to me.

I don't know if thats true, that's just my impression. But since yours is similar I think we're probably right. Seems they're way biased towards 3d art too?

Yeah, a bit.

I don't know. I want to get better, but I can't really find a good place to improve myself. So I just keep trucking on my own. I'll probably never be famous at this rate, though. ;)

Missed having you around. Glad you're back.

I think your horse does a nice job at sucking up the light, although maybe there should be shadow-swirls around the light of the eyes and ears to show it kind of trying to suck the light away from them too? And yay for badasses. xD

AMEN! Now, this is the kind of guy I want to throw stones at my window at night to whisk me away in the moonlight... actually, he's probably more likely to use a great big rock to break the window if were to do anything like that and he'd probably more like... kidnap me while I'm only half conscious...

I love how he and his horse seem to burn with an inner fire. I like that that fire comes out in the horse's ears, eyes, and nostrils and out of his eyes and is represented by the burning on his armor. The dark contrasting with the light offers great shadows that deepen the mystery of the picture and really make the shadow steed, a shadow steed. Well done! Fantastic!

"I'm too hot for my love too sexy for my love
Love's going to leave me
I'm too hot</i for my shirt too sexy for my shirt
So hot it hurts"
they wrote the lyrics wrong tut tut :giggle:

Anyway, on to the real comment,
ha! I knew you could paint hands, I'm glad you took his out of his pockets and shown us how pretty they look petting the nightmare,*ahem* I refuse to further comment the rest of the guy's appearance to stop any additional ogling and drooling, because the detailing is, indeed, amazing.
Lastly to quench your fears, the steed may be pure blackness, but it doesn't look lifeless nor exactly flat... the eyes, ears, nostrils horns and the rest of the accessories and spikes grab your attention making it more palpable... Of course the fur helps a lot too, that snout looks so fuzzy, it's begging to be petted. The neck looks more flattish, but I don't think that's a real problem because you have mister hot right and centre to grab your attention... so it's a success, don't worry

You know, this just changed my opinion about orange... I used to hate it

He looks great  And has got fantastic hand and armour in flames, very nice rendering :)

I've been thinking about painting light absorbing objects tonight, after I red your description. In fact they do not reflect light, so are invisible - totally black. There is no way to really show them without making them flat, at least I couldn't find any - if you want to stay true to the physics. Black hole sun is just black invisible point. But it might curve the space - now that is something to check, I've just been to a SF convention and attended a lecture about what is visible outside of spaceship window while it moves faster than light. Space and distance are curved, colors are different, really amazing thing I would never imagine. Maybe something similar happens with a black hole sun? It's different object not moving faster than light but consuming it, yet it has got great mass if I remeber well and could do something to space. And even if real black hole sun doesn't - the magic horse could, so it would stay flat black, but the space around might tell it's something strange going on. Just a thought like that, I'm no scientist so it all might be false ;)
And you could use the artificial clear black colour for it - against the colour theory - to stress the unnatural character of the horse. That's maybe what you did. As they said in the colour theory article at Epitome pure grey makes a hole in the picture, pure black might work the same.

Well, since in the two years I've had a DA store I've only ever sold one print... through the roof would be, like... two?

My stuff doesn't sell. Not here, and not well, anyway. Thanks for the sentiment, though. It's appreciated.

Well.. that, and I don't paint overly busty naked women or yaoi. :/ And I'm not anywhere NEAR famous. I mean, I have a few things in my gallery that have gotten some attention, but if my page hits seem high it's only because I've slowly crept up to that in the time I've been at DA. Unless you're super famous and get thirty DD or do lots of Naruto fan art or naked chicks in suggestive poses, chances are you'll end up with a small following and maybe sell one or two things.

I'm glad I paid for a print gallery, though, when I did, since I got grandfathered in to the premium print account when they switched over. But at the same time, I've not even made enough off of it to cover what I paid for it. Maybe someday I'll break even on that.

And don't worry. Your comment didn't really stir up any bad feelings, it's just a fact I've resigned myself to. And I'm glad you think this one is one of my best. It FELT like an "aha!" moment--although looking at it now, I'm not entirely sure why. All I know is, I'm really happy with this one, and I'm glad someone else sees the same thing in it.

I believe that's it - the number of entries per day vs print sale. And popular subjects, there are some more - cute chicks in lovely ball dress and / or with butterfly wings might sell also ;) I'm, the only person buying my prints, but I expected it will end up this way.

*laughs* Sex sells, it's one of the basic drives in human nature. But I'm a straight guy, so I can assure you that your latest is good not because the guy is appealingly sexy (though I imagine he is so to the right audience, and the reactions from some of the other viewers back this up), but because the picture is well-composed, well-thought-up, and beautifully detailed, with very good color choices (including the very, very hard to pull off 'really black object' (in this case, a horse)). So you have every right to be really happy with this one, it's extremely good! :)

And there's nothing wrong with the occasionally sexy woman etc. (er, anyone looking at my favorites file would realize I hold that attitude *looks a bit embarrassed* ;) ) ... as long as there's a bit more to it than just that. 'Eye candy' is a good term for it ... nothing wrong with a bit of candy, as long as its not *everything* in your diet!

I know what you mean about the page count slowly creeping up over time. Mine's been doing the same to the point where it's higher than some of the good artists here ... and I'm not even an artist! It's truly ironic.

Anyway, we may be a small following, but you've truly earned us, and I am very glad I watch your gallery. Nice getting a chance to chat with you! :)
